GAF System Plus vs Silver Pledge vs Golden Pledge: What Each Warranty Covers on a Grand Strand Roof

These three GAF enhanced shingle warranties share the same 50-year coverage for defective materials. (GAF also offers a President's Club warranty, which only its top-tier President's Club Master Elite contractors can register.) They differ on who pays when the roof was installed wrong, and on which roofer is allowed to register them.

Every term below comes from GAF's own 2026 comparison guide and sample warranties, linked at the bottom. We are a GAF Certified Plus contractor, and we say plainly which of the three we can register.

The short answer

  • All three are GAF enhanced limited warranties on a full GAF shingle system. Each gives a Lifetime manufacturing-defect term with a 50-year non-prorated period on a single-family detached home owned by individuals, and each pays tear-off and disposal when a covered repair needs it.
  • System Plus does not cover installation mistakes. Silver Pledge adds GAF-backed workmanship coverage for 10 years, or 15 years on Timberline UHDZ, Timberline AS II and GAF designer shingles. Golden Pledge makes workmanship coverage Lifetime, non-prorated for the first 25 years (30 on UHDZ, AS II and designer shingles).
  • Who can register them is set by GAF: System Plus by GAF Certified, Certified Plus or Master Elite contractors; Silver Pledge by Certified Plus or Master Elite; Golden Pledge by Master Elite only.
  • Weather Shield is listed by GAF as a GAF Certified Plus contractor, so we can register System Plus and Silver Pledge on a qualifying roof. We cannot register Golden Pledge.
  • Every one of them can be transferred once, free, to the next owner, and none takes effect until the contractor registers it and is paid in full.

What Weather Shield can and cannot register

GAF's contractor profile for Weather Shield LLC lists us as a GAF Certified Plus™ contractor. Under GAF's 2026 program guidelines, that lets us offer the System Plus and Silver Pledge limited warranties on a roof that meets their requirements.

We cannot offer Golden Pledge. GAF limits it to Master Elite contractors, and we are not one. If Golden Pledge is what you want, ask a GAF Master Elite contractor to quote it, and check their status on GAF's contractor locator before you sign.

On a roof we install with a System Plus or Silver Pledge warranty, we put the warranty name, the shingle line and every qualifying accessory on the written estimate, and we register the warranty with GAF after installation. Our own workmanship warranty is separate from GAF's, and our warranties and guarantees page explains how the two fit together.

GAF requires this disclosure: Contractors enrolled in GAF certification programs are not employees or agents of GAF, and GAF does not control or otherwise supervise these independent businesses. Contractors may receive benefits, such as loyalty rewards points and discounts on marketing tools from GAF for participating in the program and offering GAF enhanced warranties, which require the use of a minimum amount of GAF products. Your dealings with a Contractor, and any services they provide to you, are subject to the Contractor Terms of Use. Visit www.gaf.com/gaf-contractor-terms-of-use for details.

Workmanship: the real difference between the three

The materials side is the same on all three: Lifetime coverage against manufacturing defects, 50 years of it non-prorated, with labor, tear-off and disposal paid when a covered repair needs them. What separates them is whether GAF stands behind the installation itself, which GAF's warranties call misapplication.

  • System Plus covers defects in the products. If a crew installs them wrong, GAF's System Plus sample excludes damage caused by improper fastening or application that does not follow GAF's instructions. GAF's chart adds that some limited workmanship coverage may be available through your contractor.
  • Silver Pledge adds coverage for application errors in the GAF products and in the flashings at valleys, dormers, sidewalls, chimneys and plumbing vents, for 10 years on Timberline NS, HDZ and HDZ RS and 15 years on Timberline UHDZ, AS II and GAF designer shingles.
  • Golden Pledge covers the same items for the Lifetime term. It is non-prorated for 25 years on Timberline HDZ and HDZ RS and 30 years on UHDZ, AS II and designer shingles; after that, GAF reduces its payment for the use you have had.

On both Pledge warranties, an installation error found in the first two years is the installing contractor's job to fix. If GAF decides the contractor is unable or unwilling, GAF arranges the repair itself.

What no Pledge warranty treats as an installation error: inadequate attic ventilation. GAF also will not pay for siding or exterior wall work, even when it is needed to flash the roof properly. Settle both with your roofer before work starts.

Wind terms on a Grand Strand roof

Every GAF warranty in this group carries a 15-year wind warranty. What it pays for, and up to what wind speed, depends on the shingle and how it is nailed:

  • WindProven, no maximum wind speed. Requires LayerLock-labeled Timberline shingles fastened with 4 nails each, plus at least four qualifying accessories: GAF starter strip, ridge cap shingles, roof deck protection, and either leak barrier or attic ventilation. It covers the LayerLock shingles only, not the accessories.
  • 130 mph with Special Installation, 110 mph without. For other installations. Special Installation means GAF starter strip at the eaves and rakes, and 6 nails per shingle (4 for LayerLock-labeled shingles). Ridge caps have their own high-wind installation steps.
  • What a wind claim covers. Shingles that fail to seal, blow off, or are damaged by wind after they should have sealed. On System Plus the cause must be a manufacturing defect; on Silver and Golden Pledge, a defect or misapplication. GAF pays to replace the damaged shingles and hand-seal unsealed ones.

What it does not cover: winds above the covered speed (except under WindProven), objects blown onto the roof, and hail. That is homeowners insurance territory, not a shingle warranty.

Two local notes. First, the warranty's wind speed and your building code's design wind speed are different measures, so don't compare them directly; the state's Horry County wind map runs from 140 mph inland to 150 mph just off the beaches, and your roof has to meet code either way. Second, GAF's System Plus sample warns that shingles installed in fall or winter may not seal until the following spring, and that wind damage before they seal comes from the nature of self-sealing shingles, not a defect. On an October or November roof, ask how the crew will handle sealing.

Algae, transfers and claims

  • Algae streaks. GAF covers blue-green algae discoloration for 25 years on StainGuard Plus-labeled shingles and ridge caps, and 30 years on StainGuard Plus PRO-labeled shingles. Through a GAF-certified contractor with an enhanced warranty, the non-prorated part is 15 years when both the shingles and the ridge caps carry the label; otherwise 10.
  • Selling the house. One transfer, free. The buyer must notify GAF in writing within one year after the sale. Within the first 20 years after installation the buyer gets the same coverage you had; after that, a two-year period. GAF's warranty page says to email ccp@gaf.com with your name, address and purchase date and a copy of the deed or other proof.
  • Registration. Your contractor registers the warranty within 45 days of installation. If no warranty arrives from GAF within 60 days, GAF's sample warranties tell you to contact GAF. The warranty does not take effect until it is registered and the contractor is paid in full.
  • Claims. Notify GAF within 30 days after you notice a problem, at gaf.com/claims or warrantyclaims@gaf.com. Telling your contractor is not notice to GAF, and repairing before GAF evaluates the claim can get it denied, so give GAF reasonable notice before any repair that can't wait.

When Golden Pledge is worth asking for

Golden Pledge is the only one of the three where GAF backs the installation past 15 years. It also asks the most of the roof: at least five qualifying accessories, any Timberline shingle except Timberline NS, and a Master Elite installer. GAF additionally offers a FORTIFIED Roof addendum that pairs only with Golden Pledge (or GAF's President's Club warranty) on a roof with an active IBHS FORTIFIED designation.

Many roofer websites say Golden Pledge includes a GAF inspection of the finished roof. GAF's current Golden Pledge sample (dated April 2026) and its 2026 comparison guide do not list one. If an inspection is part of why you are choosing it, ask the contractor to show you where GAF commits to it in writing.

Silver Pledge is the closest step down: the same 50-year materials coverage, GAF-backed workmanship for 10 or 15 years depending on the shingle, and the same covered flashings. That is the highest GAF warranty we can register.

How to compare GAF roof quotes on the Grand Strand

Two quotes that both say “GAF lifetime warranty” can mean very different coverage. Before you compare them, make sure each one spells out:

  • The warranty by its exact GAF name (System Plus, Silver Pledge or Golden Pledge), written on the estimate, not just “lifetime warranty”.
  • The contractor's current GAF certification, checked on GAF's own contractor locator. Silver Pledge needs Certified Plus or Master Elite; Golden Pledge needs Master Elite.
  • The shingle line. Silver Pledge workmanship is 10 years on Timberline HDZ and 15 on Timberline UHDZ or AS II, and Golden Pledge's non-prorated workmanship years change the same way.
  • Every GAF accessory by name: starter strip, ridge cap, roof deck protection, leak barrier and attic ventilation. Count them against the warranty you were promised.
  • Whether the shingles are LayerLock-labeled and the system qualifies for GAF's WindProven wind warranty, and the nailing pattern the crew will use.
  • Who registers the warranty, by when (GAF says within 45 days of installation), and when you will receive the document.
  • What the contractor's own workmanship warranty covers and for how long, written separately from GAF's.
  • How the quote handles the parts GAF excludes: attic ventilation, siding or wall work around flashing, and gutters.

Questions about GAF warranties

What is the difference between GAF Silver Pledge and Golden Pledge?

Both cover manufacturing defects for a Lifetime term with 50 years non-prorated, cover tear-off and disposal when needed, and cover installation mistakes on the GAF products and the flashings at valleys, dormers, sidewalls, chimneys and plumbing vents. The difference is how long the workmanship coverage lasts and who can offer it. Silver Pledge covers workmanship for 10 years on Timberline HDZ, HDZ RS and NS, or 15 years on Timberline UHDZ, AS II and designer shingles, and needs a GAF Certified Plus or Master Elite contractor plus at least 4 qualifying accessories. Golden Pledge covers workmanship for Lifetime, non-prorated for 25 years on Timberline HDZ and HDZ RS and 30 years on UHDZ, AS II and designer shingles, and needs a GAF Master Elite contractor plus at least 5 qualifying accessories.

What does the GAF System Plus warranty cover?

System Plus covers manufacturing defects in your GAF shingles and qualifying GAF accessories for a Lifetime term, with 50 years non-prorated on a single-family detached home owned by individuals. During that period GAF pays reasonable labor to repair or re-cover and provides replacement GAF products, including tear-off and disposal when necessary. It does not cover installation mistakes. GAF's comparison guide notes that some limited workmanship coverage may be available through your contractor.

Is the GAF Golden Pledge warranty worth it?

It depends on what you want covered. Golden Pledge is GAF's only enhanced warranty in this group that backs workmanship for the life of the warranty, non-prorated for 25 or 30 years depending on the shingle. It also requires a GAF Master Elite contractor and at least five qualifying GAF accessories. If GAF-backed workmanship coverage beyond 10 or 15 years matters to you, ask Master Elite contractors to quote it and compare the full written terms. Weather Shield is GAF Certified Plus, so we cannot register Golden Pledge.

Can any GAF contractor offer the Golden Pledge warranty?

No. GAF's 2026 residential program guidelines and its warranty comparison guide limit Golden Pledge to GAF Master Elite contractors. Certified Plus contractors can offer System Plus and Silver Pledge, and GAF Certified contractors can offer System Plus. You can check any contractor's current certification on GAF's contractor locator.

Is a GAF warranty transferable when I sell my house?

Yes, once. GAF's comparison guide lists the transfer as free. The new owner must notify GAF in writing within one year after buying the house. If the sale happens within the first 20 years after installation, the new owner gets the same coverage as the original owner. After that, coverage for the new owner drops to a two-year period. GAF's warranty page says to email ccp@gaf.com with your name, address and purchase date, plus a copy of the deed or other proof of the sale date.

Does a GAF warranty cover hurricane or wind damage?

Only in a narrow way. The GAF wind warranty runs 15 years and covers shingles that fail to seal, blow off or are damaged by wind after they should have sealed, because of a manufacturing defect (System Plus) or a defect or misapplication (Silver Pledge and Golden Pledge). The remedy is replacing the damaged shingles and hand-sealing unsealed ones. Winds over the covered speed are excluded, except on LayerLock shingles under the WindProven warranty, which has no maximum wind speed. Damage from objects blown onto the roof and hail are excluded. Storm damage is a homeowners insurance question.

How long is the GAF warranty?

On GAF Lifetime shingles, the manufacturing-defect term is Lifetime for the original owner, or a properly transferred second owner, of a single-family detached home owned by individuals. For other owners and buildings, such as condominium associations or companies, GAF's comparison page lists the term as 40 years. What changes between warranties is how long coverage stays non-prorated: 10 years on the standard warranties and 50 years on System Plus, Silver Pledge and Golden Pledge.

Who registers a GAF enhanced warranty, and when does it start?

Your contractor does. GAF's sample warranties say it is the contractor's responsibility to register the warranty within 45 days of installation, and that you should contact GAF if you have not received it within 60 days. The warranty does not take effect until all eligibility requirements are met, it is registered to you, and your roofing contractor has been paid in full.

Where can I read the actual GAF warranty documents?

GAF publishes a residential warranty comparison page and sample copies of each warranty. The System Plus, Silver Pledge and Golden Pledge samples we used are linked in the sources at the bottom of this page. The warranty you receive after registration is the one that governs your roof.
