Calculate siding by measuring each wall's length × height, then subtract window and door areas. Add 10-15% for waste depending on siding style. For gables, calculate as triangles (0.5 × base × height). Our calculator does all this automatically when you enter your measurements.

One "square" of siding covers 100 square feet. Divide your total square footage by 100 to get squares needed. For example, 2,000 square feet of wall area = 20 squares of siding. Always round up and add waste factor.

Standard horizontal lap siding: 10% waste. Vertical or board & batten: 12% waste. Shake or shingle siding: 15% waste. Complex homes with many corners, angles, or architectural features may need up to 20% waste factor.

For coastal South Carolina, fiber cement (Hardie Board) and vinyl siding are excellent choices. They resist salt air corrosion, moisture, and high winds. Fiber cement offers superior hurricane resistance, while vinyl provides low maintenance at lower cost. Avoid untreated wood which deteriorates quickly in humid, salty conditions.
