Frequently Asked Questions
How many bundles of shingles do I need for a 20-square roof?
For a 20-square roof, you need 60 bundles of 3-tab shingles (3 bundles per square) or 80 bundles of architectural shingles (4 bundles per square). Add 10-15% extra for waste based on roof complexity.
What is the difference between 3-tab and architectural shingles?
3-tab shingles are flat, single-layer shingles that are thinner and less expensive. Architectural shingles are multi-layered, creating a dimensional appearance. They're heavier, more durable, and typically come with longer warranties (30-50 years vs 20-25 years).
How do I measure my roof from the ground?
Measure your home's footprint (length × width) from the ground. Then multiply by the roof pitch multiplier (e.g., 1.118 for 6/12 pitch) and add overhangs. For accurate results, add 10-20% for waste depending on roof complexity.
How much does a bundle of shingles weigh?
3-tab shingles weigh 50-65 lbs per bundle. Architectural shingles weigh 65-80 lbs per bundle. Premium/designer shingles can weigh 80+ lbs per bundle. Plan accordingly for transportation and ensure proper structural support.
Do I need ice and water shield underlayment?
In South Carolina, ice and water shield is not required by code but is recommended in valleys, around penetrations, and along eaves (first 3 feet). For coastal areas, we recommend it for additional wind-driven rain protection.
